The Precious Effect

it's going happening all over the ghetto.

what's the effect?  well, after watching the precious preview on t.v. ( some folk don't even watch the movie) folk are popping off, out of control.  if you are a heavy set dark skinned woman/girl please know that you are not immune from the precious effect.

"Ay, yo Precious!"

i was in the club and some dudes that i were with referred to this dark skinned, about 180 lbs girl as Precious.

someone referred to my sister as Precious.  she is also dark skinned and heavy.

it's beyond disrespectful.

makes me think that the strikes against Precious is not only her weight and but also her complexion.  makes me wonder if Precious was a light skinned, heavy girl would she get as much backlash.  idk. i personally think that her being not only heavy but dark skinned makes her the butt of the jokes.  if she was "thick" (i'll even go further and say heavy) and light skinned i'm not sure if other's would consider her ugly.  my theory is black folk always give light skinned folk extra (cute) points because of their complexion.

what are your thoughts . . .

I certainly agree with your light-skinned versus darker-skinned comments. We are still wrestling with a bunch of self hate in our community. Internal discrimination based on skin color in our community is a sore spot that people shy away from discussing. But the issue is still here and potent, like the elephant in the room everyone wants to ignore or get past. W.E.B. Dubois said the problem of the 20th Century would be the problem of the color line. He was right. But often wonder if he could have imagined that the problem of the 21st century would also be that of the color line, not only from external forces but from within our own community as well.
