The First Lady's Roots

The New York Times ran an article about First Lady, Michelle Obama's genealogy.

Guess what they found.

Yep, her great-great-great-grandmother (Melvinia) bore children by a white man.

My issue with some of the articles that I have read about tracing Mrs. Obama's roots is that the focus tends to be on the fact that Michelle has a white ancestor. This isn't surprising evidence considering that rape of female slaves was the norm. This happened all the time.

Somebody wants to prove a point.

Like, "Aha, I told ya'll that she wasn't 100% black!"

I can just hear them now.
Anything to take away from the fact that a black couple is on the top in America. Something about this research is fishy.

I wished that more attention was placed on the beauty of the story -- the First Lady of America is a direct descendant of a slave girl who was worth only $475, a slave girl who was torn from her family at the tender age of 6. How amazing is that?!

What are your views on the public's (genealogist Megan Smolenyak and the New York Times) quest to find out Michelle's history?
